FYI Friday: SeeClickFix
May 20, 2022
Transcript

Hello!

Have you seen public issues?

For example, have you seen all the street lights working except for one?

Have you seen illegal dumping or littering?

Have you seen an animal carcass lying in public?

Lost a pet and need help to find them?

These are some examples of many public issues.

What to do? How to report?

I have found a cool app!

It is called "SeeClickFix".

It is easy to use.

Enter the app, take a picture, write a brief description, then submit.

Your report will be sent to a specific government agency responsible for public issues.

FYI Friday: Disability Indicator Form
May 13, 2022
Transcript

Hi! I’m Margarida. Welcome to FYI Friday.

Did you ever think to yourself if there is such a thing that will allow me to inform 911 personnel of my unique safety and/or communication needs in case of an emergency?

Well, there is – it is called the Massachusetts Disability Indicator Program.

If you google: disability indicators mass. Gov (holding up paper with link).

Click on the first link and something similar to this will show up on your screen (hold paper to show).

It talks about the program, and it has a link that allows you to download and print out an application.

It looks like this (shows application). It is a two-page application. It tells you how to complete the form and where to send it once you complete it.

Thank you for watching.

FYI Friday: Captioning Apps

Transcript

Hi. My name is Linda and welcome to FYI Friday. So today I'd like to share with you a little bit about captioned apps on mobile devices and tablets, and how they can help you. So, you know when you're in a restaurant and you're trying to enjoy a dinner with your family and friends. And you cannot follow the conversation, so you start feeling left out and conversations happening all around you. It's pretty frustrating, right?

Imagine if you could have this mobile app, which is a captioning app. And as you can see, it's picking up all my words. So this means the next time you are in a restaurant, you push the microphone button and it will start recording all of your words. So you can sit back and relax and enjoy the company of your family and friends with no stress and no frustrations. Are you interested in learning more? Please contact us, and we will be happy to sit with you and show you different options that you have, and which one would be the best fit for you. Okay. Thank you.

Internet Safety Workshop Recap
May 5, 2022
Transcript

Hello everyone, my name is Chi. I just finished presenting for a workshop about internet safety.

I am here to summarize that workshop. We firstly focused on cyberbullying. That means people who use social media with inflammatory intentions. They post pictures, text posts, and the likes to harm others.

Secondly, to be mindful before we post something on social media. Was the post intended to inform others or to express your feeling? For example, if you typed a message wishing a specific person to die, does that mean you really want to kill that person, or were you venting and not literally meant what you said??

Thirdly, posting pictures. If you were posting pictures with someone else in the image, it is important to ask them for their permission before posting their picture on the internet.

Fourthly, sharing accounts. Imagine if you set up a bank account, is it ok to share your username and password to other people like your friends and family? You will never know if they leak your login information then someone ends up stealing your money. You must think carefully about sharing your account!

Lastly, password security. It is important to have a good and strong password to prevent your account from being compromised easily. Does your password have a long character length, a mixture of upper/lower cases, and numberings?

I hope you enjoyed watching the workshop.

If you missed the workshop, please reach out to DEAF Inc., and we will host the workshop again!

Health Care Proxy
April 27, 2022
Transcript

Hello! I want to let you know that we just finished hosting a workshop called “What is Health Care Proxy.”

What is that? It is related to documents for your health if something happens to you and you cannot communicate with a doctor directly and independently.

What to do?? To become your proxy, you can have someone you trust, such as your mother, father, husband, wife, sister, brother, cousins, or even best friend.

With your permission, your proxy will represent you to your doctor. Your doctor will update your proxy on what happened to you. Your proxy will make decisions honoring your wishes.

How to get yourself a proxy? Do I need a lawyer?

No, you don’t need a lawyer because they have proxy documents for you to be filled out. No need to make this more complicated. You can ask for assistance in filling out the proxy documents.

You can call DEAF, Inc. staff for support, and you also can go to the website: https://bit.ly/healthproxyma.

You will find explanations and step-by-step guidelines for each document on the website. You also can download them to print copies.

If you have any questions, please contact an Independent Living Specialist.
