Position: Independent Living Specialist
Hours: Part-Time (17.5 hours/week)
Location: New Bedford, MA
Overview: The Independent Living (IL) Specialist is part of a team of IL Specialists that provide IL services to Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing, or Late-Deafened individuals with varied communication methods and linguistic backgrounds. This position is part of our Southeast regional team and primarily works with individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and use sign language to communicate. The IL Specialist will receive initial and ongoing trainings on a variety of topics to support their work.
Summary of Duties:
- Work 1:1 with consumers to accomplish independent living goals by creating person-centered individual service plans, connecting consumers to other services as needed, and documenting progress towards goals
- Advocate for effective communication and access for consumers to achieve their goals.
- Provide outreach and education, including exhibits, workshops, and presentations.
- Coordinate workshops on topics of interest to consumers with the Southeast team.
Qualifications: Ability to communicate directly with Hard of Hearing and Late-Deafened adults who use American Sign Language or other visual methods of communication. Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2 years of experience working with Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing, and Late-Deafened individuals preferred. Must have own car and be willing to travel.
