The ASL Student Success Story: Tanya

March 5, 2021

Josh: Hello! Could you tell us a bit about yourself? Your name, where you grew up, and what you do for work?

Tanya: Hello! My name is Tanya and I’m from Massachusetts. I currently live in North Carolina and I’ve been here for 20 years with my mother and grandmother. I work for myself as a photographer.

Josh: Awesome, thank you! What inspired you to take ASL classes at DEAF, Inc.?

Tanya: My nephew is Deaf, so my family and I have been learning to sign. I was taking classes at a local college here in NC until the Coronavirus outbreak, then classes were cancelled. I started looking for other locations to take ASL classes. I called my brother and he said, “Come take ASL classes with me at DEAF, Inc.!” This was a terrific solution! So, I signed up and here I am!

Josh: Great! Thank you! Which classes have you taken with DEAF, Inc.?

Tanya: I have taken ASL 3 and I am currently in ASL 4. It’s tricky but I love it!

Josh: Nice! Do you plan on taking more ASL classes with DEAF, Inc. in the future?

Tanya: Yes definitely! DEAF, Inc. is a great agency and I’m learning so much. Not only are we learning how to sign, but we’re learning about Deaf culture and the Deaf community as well. The course is going great!

Josh: Awesome thank you! On to our fourth question: How do you continue staying involved with the Deaf community?

Tanya: Well, last year I would go to Deaf coffee chats. Now I go to Zoom meetups. It’s much harder now with the pandemic.

Josh: Yes, I completely agree.

Tanya: Everything is online now.

Josh: Nice! Moving on to our final question: What is the most important thing you’ve learned from taking classes here at DEAF, Inc?

Tanya: Hearing people must learn to sign. We have to support the Deaf community. It is a NEED to learn ASL.

Josh: Yes, I certainly agree! Well, that concludes our interview. Thank you so much for your time!

Tanya: Thank you! It was nice meeting you!

Josh: Nice to meet you too! Goodbye!
