Senior Independent Living Program
Independent Living Services for Seniors who are Deaf, Oral Deaf, Late Deafened, and Hard of Hearing.
DEAF, Inc. Senior Independent Living Services program is open to all seniors age 60 and older, and their families.
Our Senior IL Specialists are experienced in variety of ways to communication, including sign, so you can communication directly and comfortably with them.
Come Meet with Us
You can come to our office in Allston, where you can also meet other Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing and Late Deafened people. Or, we can meet with in your home, at the senior citizens center, your apartment community room to discuss how we can help you to live safely and independently. You can find:
Information, support and advocacy for:
- Applying for benefits (SSI/SSDI/SSA, Food Stamps, Medicare, Medicaid)
- Finding housing & legal assistance
- Getting medical care
- Other services and general information
Support from other seniors:
Talk with others who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, share your experiences and learn ways to cope.
Workshops:
- Communication coping strategies
- Survival English and Math skills
- Managing your finances (budgeting, bank accounts, credit and debit cards, and check writing)
- Getting around on the MBTA/The Ride
- Emergency Preparedness

Assistive Technology
We offer home safety and technology evaluation for seniors and assist seniors who want to apply for funding to obtain needed equipment. We can assess your home for improvements, and help you apply for Federal funds for the purchase of assistive technology. (Title VII, Part B Program; Rules and Restrictions apply.) We can help you with:

We also work with professionals and family members to identify seniors who can benefit from our services, and to educate professionals about working with Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing and Late-Deafened seniors.

Living Program is part of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Independent Living Program and offers a range of services.
Other DEAF, Inc. Services
Project HOPE (Health Outreach and Prevention Education) offers information and education about health and disease prevention, referrals, advocacy and support for Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing and Late-Deafened people.
Types of services include:
- Case Management for people living with HIV/AIDS or other major health conditions;
- Health-related educational reading materials and videotapes and workshops
- Peer Support; and Referral Services for health-related issues
- DeafBlind Community Access Network matches DeafBlind individuals with trained Providers to access and be involved in the community statewide.

- Schedule a home visit to assess your assistive technology needs
- Get help obtaining hearing aids, visual doorbells, phone enhancements, smoke detectors and other alarms and useful tools
- Learn about benefits and get help signing up for benefits
- Get help accessing health insurance and medical care
- Learn about new public health information and how to keep yourself healthy
- Join an exercise class
- Learn how to prepare for an emergency!
