Project HOPE

Project HOPE (Health Outreach Prevention and Education) offers health support services to the Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing and Late-Deafened people of Greater Boston and Eastern Massachusetts.

All our services are provided in ASL, and are free and confidential

OUR SERVICES

Our health support services include:

  • Case Management Services
We provide case management for Deaf people living with HIV/AIDS and their families.  We help with housing, getting food stamps, accessing health care, benefits, information and referral, and more.
  • Health Workshops
Our workshop topics are all about health!  We develop our workshop topics based on current public health issues or consumer requests.  Example topics include: diabetes, blood pressure, understanding prescriptions, how to use condoms, preventing HIV/AIDS, flu prevention, healthy relationships, and more!
  • Prevention Education on HIV/AIDS, STDs, and Viral Hepatitis (B and C)
Our staff provide individual and group level interventions to Deaf people to provide opportunities for evaluating their risk for infection, and to develop strategies for harm reduction.  We are only able to provide this service to Boston residents.  If you live outside of Boston and want to receive support, please contact us for a VP appointment.
  • Healthy Cooking Classes
At our healthy cooking classes, you can learn what kinds of food are good for your health, why some foods are better than others, and find out which recipes are healthy and easy to make.  Plus, you’ll get to taste the food after it’s been made!
  • Fitness & Exercise Classes
Learn how to make your body healthier through exercise!  Our Health Specialists provide individual fitness and group classes.  We can help you establish fitness goals, and provide support so you can accomplish your goals.
  • Health/Medical Advocacy
Do you need support to better understand your medical condition? Do you want extra support to help you achieve your health goals, or support with managing your prescriptions?  Do you need advocacy for getting interpreters for your appointments?
  • Training for Service Providers Who Work With Deaf People
Project HOPE provides training on Deaf culture and how to work with American Sign Language interpreters for health and medical providers who with Deaf people.  We can modify our trainings to fit your needs.
  • Information and Referral
We provide information and referral to specific services according to individual needs.
  • Annual Deaf Community Health Fair
Every year since 2001, Project HOPE has hosted a Health Fair for members of the Deaf community.  This event is a wonderful opportunity for community members to learn about new and interesting health topics, learn about health services in the Boston area, and get free health screenings for cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, and HIV.  This event is typically held in the spring.
  • Healthy Lifestyles for Deaf Senior Citizens
We also provide health and wellness services to Deaf senior citizens ages 60 and up in the North Shore, South Shore, and Greater Boston.  We offer health workshops of interest to seniors, fitness classes to increase flexibility, agility, and strength, and healthy cooking classes that are delicious and easy to make for seniors.
  • Free Safe-Sex Materials
Project HOPE provides safe-sex materials for free to anyone who wants them.  We carry lubricated and non-lubricated condoms, Reality® female condoms, dental dams, and lube.  We also carry bleach kits for safe cleaning of used needles.  These materials can be found in the restrooms on the 1st floor of DEAF, Inc.
