DEAF, Inc. to Provide IL Services in 3 Out of 5 Regions

Last year, the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (MCDHH) reduced the number of regions served by Deaf and Hard of Hearing Independent Living Service (DHILS) providers from 10 regions down to 5 larger regions. The MCDHH selected DEAF, Inc. to provide Deaf and Hard of Hearing Independent Living Services for 3 of the 5 regions: the Northeast, Greater Boston, and Southeastern Massachusetts, including the Cape Cod and the Islands. DHIL services are now available to Deaf youth, ages 14 – 22, as well as adults and seniors. In addition to regular DHILS, DEAF, Inc. now offers youth leadership services (ages 14-22), and job readiness skills development for youth (ages 14-22), and emergency preparedness (ages 14 and up).

DEAF, Inc.’s ASL for First Responders Improves Health and Safety

In November, 2008, DEAF, Inc. launched a new training program for emergency medical technicians, hospital emergency room medical personnel, firefighters, police, and others who respond first to emergency calls and crises. “ASL for First Responders" introduces Hearing participants to Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing and Late-Deafened culture and provides basic ALS language development, focusing on medical and emergency vocabulary. By improving understanding and communication between emergency first responders and Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing and Late-Deafened people experiencing emergencies, we can improve the overall health and safety of the Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing and Late-Deafened community. After its successful launch, the state recognized the importance of the training and awarded Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for any first responder who successfully completed the ASL for First Responders training. (All first responders are required to complete new CEUs in order to continue providing emergency response services.)

The “ASL for First Responders” curriculum was developed jointly by DEAF, Inc.’s Project HOPE and Adult Education program and is taught by trained Deaf instructors. For information on class schedule and availability, or to register for the next ASL for First Responders, email us at info@deafinconline.org.

ASL CPR/AED/First Aid Certification Classes

In collaboration with the Red Cross, DEAF, Inc. has developed and will offer Red Cross Certification training in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) and First Aid to members of the Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing and Late-Deafened community. The course, which is offered in ASL with an ASL-based certification exam, was designed by DEAF, Inc.’s Project HOPE staff based on the CPR/AED/First Aid Certification training offered to Hearing members of the community by the Red Cross, is expected to be available to the community in late Fall 2010.

Now Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing and Late-Deafened adults (ages 18 and over) can become certified by learning how to save lives. The ASL CPR/AED/First Aid Certification training teaches how provide emergency resuscitation to someone experiencing a heart attack, what to do if someone is choking, how to treat emergencies like serious cuts and burns, and more. Prepare yourself and improve the safety and health of our community. Contact us at projecthope@deafinconline.org for information on CPR/AED/First Aid Certification training schedules and registration.

DEAF, Inc. Casino Night – A Win

On May 1, 2010, DEAF, Inc.’s Board of Directors hosted Casino Night, a spring Fund-Raiser to benefit DEAF, Inc. Held at the spacious and accommodating site donated by City Year Boston, the evening featured card tables, games tables, Roulette, and other games of chance. It made for a great night of socializing and fun. DEAF, Inc. staff and volunteers were trained by Happy Knights, who partially sponsored the tables and games equipment. Guests received chips with which to play, and enjoyed snacks and desserts provided by Trader Joes, members of the Board, and Ellen Budnick-Gross. Top players won gift certificates donated by the Deaf Poker Tour and Capital Grille Restaurant. Boston area’s outstanding interpreters donated their time to help keep the event accessible to all.
