Contracted Project HOPE Health Specialist, approx. 30 hours/month, to begin Jan. 2012 Duties: The contracted Project HOPE Health Specialist will provide services in American Sign Language for a project whose objectives are to promote healthy aging for Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing, or Late-Deafened (“Deaf”) senior citizens aged 55 and up. The Health Specialist will work closely with the Project HOPE Director to prepare and provide health education and nutrition workshops, exercise classes, and outreach activities to Deaf seniors living in Eastern Massachusetts. Specific duties are as follows: - Conduct health education workshops and health-related activities for older Deaf adults; - Develop and/or update existing PowerPoint presentations about health-related topics affecting older adults, including nutrition and healthy eating topics; - Conduct exercise and fitness classes that promote mobility, flexibility, and increase energy - Outreach to the older Deaf community and encourage behaviors and choices that promote healthy aging and healthy living; - Assist in collaborating with health and medical service providers to promote and advocate for Deaf-accessible services; - Assist in developing vlogs and flyers to recruit older Deaf adults to workshops and events; - Prepare monthly summaries of activities, collect demographic and attendance information, and provide assistance in preparing progress reports. - Be available to work some evenings and weekend hours as needed. - Other duties as assigned by supervisor. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred, but not required. Preferred qualifications include: strong interpersonal skills, ability to prepare written reports and articles and meet deadlines, and experience working with senior citizens. Required qualifications include: strong knowledge of health topics related to diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, nutrition, exercise and fitness, and disease prevention; basic cooking skills; knowledge of exercise/fitness; minimum 2 years’ experience in human services working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing people, and conversational fluency in ASL. Must have own car and be willing to travel. Supervision: Reports to the Director of Project HOPE.
