JOB OPPORTUNITIES :

Contracted Project HOPE Health Specialist, 16 hours/month

Duties: The Project HOPE Health Specialist will provide support for a project whose objectives promote healthy aging for senior citizens who are Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing, or Late-Deafened.  Duties revolve around working closely with our other Health Specialist in providing health education workshops, healthy cooking classes, and exercise classes in American Sign Language to Deaf seniors in the North Shore, South Shore, and the Greater Boston area.  Specific duties are as follows: 

- Conduct some one-on-one and group public health awareness and prevention education activities targeted at senior citizens.

- Assist in workshop and presentation development on health-related topics for seniors.

- Prepare and conduct some exercise/fitness classes that enhance manual dexterity and improve mobility and/or flexibility.

- Prepare and lead some interactive cooking classes utilizing healthy and nutritious recipes.

- Outreach to Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing, and Late-Deafened people and encourage behaviors and choices that promote healthy aging.

- Provide some case management services including facilitating assessment of consumers’ health needs, developing and monitoring of individualized service plans, coordinating referrals for a wide range of support services, and provision of support related to utilizing resources for self-help and health maintenance.

- Assist in collaboration with health and medical service providers to promote and advocate for services that are accessible to Deaf people, including Deaf seniors.

- Assist in developing online and printed media that promote healthy living and are Deaf-accessible, including writing articles, producing vlogs and other videos, and creating brochures.

- Assist in documentation of activities and preparation of progress and statistical reports.

- Assist with the annual Health Fair and AIDS Walk events.

- Be available to work some evenings and weekend hours as needed.

- Other duties as assigned by supervisor. 

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred, but not required.  Strong knowledge of health topics related to diabetes, obesity, nutrition, exercise and fitness, and disease prevention.  Cooking skills required, preferably with teaching experience.  Knowledge/experience with exercise/fitness required.  Strong interpersonal skills, ability to meet deadlines, computer literate, ability to prepare written reports and articles.  Experience working with senior citizens preferred.  Minimum 2 years experience in human services working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing people.  Must have own car.  Ability to communicate in ASL required.

Supervision: Reports to the Director of Project HOPE.
